The Best Ships are Friendships

After the rough ride on the ship on the way over to Korea, I kept some good friendships going. I had two weeks stuck in the hull of a ship full of sick people. I was lucky and didn’t get sick so I was constantly looking after the guys that slept around me in the bunks. They really appreciated me being there for them. There is nothing more terrifying than to be somewhere that no one knows you or seems to care, and be sickly besides all of that.

Once we landed some of the guys thanked me, even though some of them were going to other parts of Korea.  We remained friends at a distance.

I just happened to hook up with a couple of them when we had our R and R (Rest and recuperation,) time in Tokyo since we had the same length of time together.

It was a fun time going to see the Pagodas, the gardens, and seeing the nightlife while I was with them.

We came back to our companies refreshed and ready to work hard again.

Have you had a time when you wish you could find friends to be with you during an ordeal that you were having hard time facing?

Did you have to meet with a doctor to see the results of a very serious test they had done. I have.  Did you feel left alone when you had a divorce, and people frowned on it? I have. Have you lost loved ones and mourned the loss? I have. Have you been accused of something that wasn’t true? I have.

Through all of these trials and storms I had a core of friends and family around me to console me and hold my hand. Without all those friendships and a circle of love ones, I may not have been here today.

I have battled depression, and self-doubt, but through the consistency of family and friends around me, I was able to realize I wasn’t walking the path alone.

IWILL

Never take on a tough moment alone. Always lean on your family and friends. There is nothing shameful about seeking support for you when you are going through some horrific times. God is also there for you. He is never farther away than a prayer.

You will be surprised how well you can withstand the storms with an army of people, and God, fighting with you.

Think About This

Isn’t it interesting that if you have God on your side you can take on anything?

Traumatic Brain Injury Classifications Are Leading to Preventable Deaths, Report Says

The terms “mild,” “moderate,” and “severe” used by doctors to annually categorize head injuries in roughly two million Americans, are outdated and imprecise, and treatments based on those terms are leading to increased medical costs and preventable deaths, according to a report published Feb. 1.

I’ve Been Gased!

One of the parts of basic training was to learn about chemical warfare. They taught us about what the gases were, and what effect they had on people.

The hardest part of this training is that you had to go through their “gas chamber,” yourself. You could carry your gas mask, but you couldn’t put it on in the chamber until you shouted your military serial number you were assigned, and then on some occasions they might ask you other questions.

This is while your eyes feel like they are coming out of your head, and tears are so thick in your eyes you can’t see at all. You are coughing and spitting out words that may seem nonsensical to others, but for you it was desperation to literally feel like you you’re just trying to stay alive.

19658538….No it’s 19768538…No it’s….19635854. You keep trying to get your serial number right. It is hard because your brain is being fried.

You finally get through the maze, and you are out the other side. You can barely see the other men lying on the grass, all coughing and sneezing just like you are. You take several deep breaths, and you begin to feel better.

You have been through a “gas chamber,” in your life. The day you went to find out you were going to be deployed to Iraq, or Afghanistan. For us older guys it would be Korea, or Vietnam. To a few good men and women that are still with us, it was WWII.

It is a time of a sudden crash of everything you thought was OK. It stops your heart for a second, and you sense instant fear of the unknown.

This is the time we find out what our true character is. Like when I was on a plane ready to be shipped to the Bay of Pigs. I was in fear, but in my heart I was ready to do whatever it took to defend those who needed help. I am sure you felt the same way.

Fear is not a bad thing, as I have said before. It keeps us on the right track to being alert, and ready.

We can also face this fear by knowing that we have a God that is right there with us each step we take. He is there to guide us and keep us out of harm’s way, if that is His will.

Be proud that you have, or are now serving your country. Don’t let the tear gases of life get you down. Always remain strong, and be a good example for all those around you.

IWILL

I may be pushing the thought of facing fear in the military a little hard in this book, but I think that is one of the overwhelming factors that cause us to go through depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and the many other usual suspects that haunt in while serving our country.

Fear is, sometimes, not a bad thing. It can get us in an alert mood that keeps us keen on the task ahead.

Think About This

Isn’t it funny that sometimes fear gives us more strength and courage?

Here is another excerpt for my upcoming book, Signs of Hope for the Military: In and Out of the trenches of Life.

Happiness is a Choice

It is a well known fact that most people are as happy as they choose to be. People go through life allowing depression to overcome them to the point where they are incapacitated. Even presidents have trouble with depression. Can you imagine the daily stress they have? It is non-stop.

Abraham Lincoln once considered suicide, he was so depressed. One of the greatest times he remembered while in office was when a little old lady came to see him at the White House, and gave him some cookies she had made. He thanked her, and it was one of the grestest moments of his tenure. A very little gesture, but it brightened a person’s life that was battling depression in life in general.

Some people accept depression, because they think they deserve it. They they have done something wrong and this is their punishment. I had some of those days myself. I often thought, I must deserve this if it keeps happening to me.

This world is not the Disney channel anymore, it is Law and Order. There are many battles to fight on many fronts.

Many people try to find happiness to overcome depression, and they fail? Why?

Because so many people think a fancy car, a big house on the hill, or own a yacht, will give them happiness, and “things,” do not give us happiness. We also seek happiness through sexual prowess, but end up with fleeting pleasures and bitter disappointments.

We try to seek power in corporations, in government, or in our own families through excessive control, but still many are unfulfilled.

What are they missing? They are missing inner joy and peace.

How do we get that inner peace and joy? It is from the love of God who provides us with all the love and understanding we need.

While we spend time in the military, or many years afterward, we need to know that the path to true happiness isn’t for “things” we own, or people we control, it is found through searching our own souls, and coming up with the ways to reach out to those around us, and when we feel the love, they return it back to us.
