This old soldier is tired of the events happening in our country today. So much turmoil and fear. My country is the greatest country in the world and yet, we are losing favor with other countries. Why? (My opinion) The leadership of country is weak. They allow too many threats to our country that they ignore, and claim everything is rosy.

We need a wake up call, and soon!

The are many more stories that have been forgotten, but I interviewed four WWII veterans for my new book, and they are amazing. Each one had a near death experience. They didn’t do anything heroic, but put their lives on the line.

The book is called, Signs of Hope for the Military: In and Out of the Trenches of Life.

I was at a meeting where my son was the MC. He did a tremendous job leading the meeting. I was sitting behind all the people to try to stay out of the meeting. Then someone asked who I was, and my son said, “He is my dad.” Then a women shouted, “You were my fourth grade teacher.” Sure enough I met with the lady and she in my fourth grade class many years before that. We had a special relationship as I was her tutor during the summer.

She reminded me that my helping her put her on track to be an outstanding student.

I am sure you have many people you didn’t know where veterans. They seem to hide. They aren’t sure they want to share their time in the service. Be free to ask anyone if they are veterans. You will be surprised to find how many are.

I will share one story where I found out a person was a veteran, that I knew for over 65 years.

_______________________________________________________________

I was shopping for groceries, and came across an older man who had on a WWII veteran hat on. I thanked him for his service and moved on. I kicked myself for not asking him if I could interview him for my upcoming book, Signs of Hope for the Military: In and Out of the Trenches of Life. Well, I came up to the cash register, and there he was checking out ahead of me. (Accident? I don’t think so.) . I approached him and asked him if I could interview him and he said sure. He gave me his business card, and I stuck it in my pocket.

When I got home I looked at the card, and it was his business card from where he worked. Actually he owned it. The business was “Bob’s 19 cent hamburgers.” I almost fainted.

In 1957 there was a new hamburger joint that opened up. It was his place, It was on the way home from school. I stopped there everyday, and bought a hamburger. Bob came up to me several times to thank me for being there. We developed a friendship.

So 65 years later he was back in my life. I had the interview with him and it was fantastic. He was a Captain in Okinawa, and had a near death experience.

Here is the third in a series of three interviews with WWII Veterans. Bob Coury was a Captain in the Army. His story follows.

What was your job as a Captain?

I had a full company of men who unloaded ships in Okinawa.

How did that go?

We did a great job of keeping equipment, and supplies to the soldiers fighting Okinawa.

Did you have any times you almost died?

I was up on one of the ships and somehow I feel off into the ocean. I was in between the ship and a barge that was moving in the waves. If I didn’t get out of there fast the barge could crush me. I swam fast to the end of the barge and was able to make it to shore. (Near death experience)

I asked him how hard it was to unload the ships in enemy territory?

It was very hard because the Kamikaze planes were trying to hit the ship we were Unloading.

Any advice to young recruits?

Always obey your leaders, and do your best.

I have a side story about Bob Coury. I was shopping for groceries one day and I saw a man with a WWII hat on. I went up to him and said, “Thank you for your service. ” We both went on our way and I thought why onearth didn’t I ask him if he would allow me to interview him.

I Figured I had made a huge mistake. However when I got in line to ay for my groceries there he was in line. I didn’t hesitate, and asked him if I could interview him. He said sure and handed me one of his cards.

I looked at the card and it blew me away. This guy owned all the Bob’s Hamburgers restaurants in the area! I knew him from way back in highschool.

______________________________________________________________

His push was that he had 19 cent hamburgers. He happend to build his first restaurant in the street I walked home from high school. He was there working everyday.

My mom gave me 25 cents to get a burger every day on my way home. Bob even stopped to talk to me from time to time. I got a cup of water and chomped away.

I never thought for a New York minute that this guy would be back in my life.

We have become good friends. He just past the age of 100 this year and he is still going.
