I have a good friend who is a Vietnam veteran. I have coffee with him twice a week, and we are going to lunch today.

I have tried to talk to him about his time there, and he just doesn’t want to talk. I asked him why.

He was wounded by shrapnel. I said he should get a Purple Heart for that. He thoughts are, “I lost too many friends. They deserve the Purple Heart, not me. I am still alive.”

________________________________________________________________

There are many Vietnam veterans that have that attitude. They have lost too many buddies, and don’t feel they deserve any medals since they are still alive. I can understand that, but they are still heroes in my book.

________________________________________________________________

The military seems to be losing good soldiers. The recruitment is going slowly. Not many young men feel they need to serve their country. I hope they are able to come up with ideas to overcome that.

I had the privilege to meet a Vietnam veteran while shopping for groceries. I seem to have the knack to find them. This guy is a true hero. His name is Milt Hoch. He had three tours in Vietnam. He didn’t have to. He chose to.

He was in intense fighting, even face to face fighting. He was once stabbed through both legs at once with a bayonet. He was still able to kill the enemy and survive.

I have an interview with him in my upcoming book, Signs of Hope for the Military: In and Out of the Trenches of Life. It is riveting.

Keep coming back to hear about other heroes. Better yet…go to the top of this page and click on subscribe. When you do all future posts will go directly to your inbox.

While in South Korea, I was walking back to my barracks, when I saw a man come out of the base bar, and started to take a leak. He has just startled when he saw that his urine was freezing before it hit the ground. He immediately went back inside. At the same time four soldiers came out of the bar and they were pretty drunk. They challenged one of them to stick his tongue on the flag pole bar. I wanted to scream out try to stop him, but it was too late. He put his tongue on the bar and it froze to the bar.

He started screaming in pain, and his buddies knew right away it was a wrong thing to do. They called the medics and they came. They had to use some hot water to get him loose, which hurt him even more.

Not sure how long he was in the hospital, and what his company commander thought about it.

I am proud to say I am a veteran. I served with honor. My family has a history of being in the military. I had three uncles who fought in WWII; two received Purple hearts. I was in the Army and was deployed to Korea. My son was a career soldier and retired as a Colonel. Three generations of loyal Americans.

Would I go back in if they had a way to let me? In a New York minute! I am sadden by what is happening in our world and we as a nation need to stand up and take notice. We do not need to go fight in every little skirmish around the world, but we also need to defend those who are in danger.

This Military Appreciation Month, I hope you will take an extra minute to recognize the sacrifices made by our Nation’s service members.
