Do you have to stay at your post if you are injured? I was told yes, while deployed to South Korea. I was working on hill 468 one day and the equipment stopped running. I went out to check the generator and it was out of gas. The person before me was supposed to fill it.

I got some gas containers and climbed up on the generator. I was pouring gas into the generator when I slipped. All I could grab to break my fall was the manifold. It was super hot and it burned my left hand tremendously. I went back inside the hut and tried to bandage the wound. I had some ointment and spread it on the hand that was severely burnt. I wrapped it up with some gauze.

It was extremally painful. What should I do? I could have called down to the headquarters and sought help. However, I didn’t want to mess up the working schedule. I lived in pain and finished my shift.

Was I a hero? Of course not, but I was gratified that I didn’t make things worse.

I saw the medics when I got down to the camp, and they put much better dressings on my hand. I only lost a couple of days of work.
