Actually a pretty solid one, given how many other war films have come out on top.

I have a good friend who is a Vietnam veteran. I have coffee with him twice a week, and we are going to lunch today.

I have tried to talk to him about his time there, and he just doesn’t want to talk. I asked him why.

He was wounded by shrapnel. I said he should get a Purple Heart for that. He thoughts are, “I lost too many friends. They deserve the Purple Heart, not me. I am still alive.”

________________________________________________________________

There are many Vietnam veterans that have that attitude. They have lost too many buddies, and don’t feel they deserve any medals since they are still alive. I can understand that, but they are still heroes in my book.

________________________________________________________________

The military seems to be losing good soldiers. The recruitment is going slowly. Not many young men feel they need to serve their country. I hope they are able to come up with ideas to overcome that.

I had the privilege to meet a Vietnam veteran while shopping for groceries. I seem to have the knack to find them. This guy is a true hero. His name is Milt Hoch. He had three tours in Vietnam. He didn’t have to. He chose to.

He was in intense fighting, even face to face fighting. He was once stabbed through both legs at once with a bayonet. He was still able to kill the enemy and survive.

I have an interview with him in my upcoming book, Signs of Hope for the Military: In and Out of the Trenches of Life. It is riveting.

Keep coming back to hear about other heroes. Better yet…go to the top of this page and click on subscribe. When you do all future posts will go directly to your inbox.

US military downs yet another unidentified object in third shootdown in as many days [Updated]
Have you ever lost a buddy while being deployed? I have. Two of them. The first one was a high school buddy. We were sent to Korea, and he didn’t come home alive. Some virus took him out.
The second one was a buddy from my company while stationed at Camp Red Cloud, in Uijeongbu. Korea. He had been out drinking in the village, and got extremely drunk. He was staggering back to the camp when he fell into a “honey bucket.” A honey bucket is a hole in the ground that the farmers put all their human wastes. They used it for fertilizer. He suffocated.

If you have had to go through this I am with you. The dreams never go away.

I am sitting in my den and typing this post. I am watching a bowl game between Tulane and USC. The game was just tied by Tulane, 14-14. This is my way of working. Love it.

I am going to share a story about a Vietnam soldier that lost his best friend. He asked me to not share his name which I always honor.

I decided to stop at a hamburger place on my way home one day. I got my food and was walking to my table, when I saw a Vietnam vet. I knew that, because he was wearing a Vietnam hat.

I thanked him for his service, and sat down. I could see him eating. He was in pain. He finished his meal and got up to throw his garbage away. He walked right by me.

I asked him if he could sit and talk for a little bit. He looked like he didn’t want to do that, until I told him I was a veteran. He sat down.

We talked idly for a few minutes, and then I started asking him questions.

I asked him what he did in Vietnam. He said he was on a ship off the coast of Vietnam. Their job was to send supplies to the troops, and bring out the wounded in helicopters.

I asked him what was his worst moment. He said that lost his best friend who was a pilot of one of the helicopters. On one takeoff the engine died and the helicopter went straight down into the water. There was another soldier on the Helicopter. They never recovered the bodies, because the water was too deep.

I had many other question to ask him, and You can see the full interview in my upcoming book, Signs of Hope for the Military: In and Out of the Trenches of Life.
