“When I opened the door, it didn’t even register at first who I was looking at, and when it finally clicked … words cannot describe the feeling.” That’s from Army veteran Adam Strick, who got a surprise visit on Saturday night from his old battle buddy Mike Fligg. The two spent every day of their 15-month deployment to Iraq together, but they had not seen each other in 14 years.

Holidays are cherished times spent with family and loved ones. Sometimes, due to deployment, or situations outside of our control, we can’t spend holidays with the people we love.

This chapter was about my exposure to White Lightening

White Lightning in West Virginia

While I was stationed at Ft Bragg, North Carolina, we went on maneuvers in West Virginia. We were out in the country hills right in the middle of farm land.

We had time off on one of the days there so a couple of others guys and me went on a walk through the farm land. As we came around a bend, we saw some men sitting up on a hill in lawn chairs laughing and carrying on. We thought we might as well get to know some of the locals.

As we got closer we saw that the men had rifles leaning up against their chairs. I started thinking about the movie, Deliverance. They were all in overalls, and were smoking pipes with who knows what in them. Beards were the style for all of them. They would fit right in with the people of, Duck Dynasty.

We said hi, and they invited us to sit with them for a while. I noticed one of them was drinking out of a Mason jar. It looked like water, but I knew better. One of my friends asked what it was. “We call it White Lightning, here,” said one of the men who looked like he may be the elder of the group.

I was such a naïve young man, that I had no idea what they meant by the term White Lightning. They laughed when I asked them.

They said I should take a taste of it to see for myself. They handed me a jar, and I took a sip. I thought my insides were going to explode. I made some kind of noise, because all the Virginia guys laughed when it looked like I was going to heave.

However, the guys with me were “veteran,” drinkers and they tried a taste. They really liked it and drank the whole jar full. It wasn’t long before they started acting “silly.”

One of them liked it so much he asked for a refill. The “farmers,” had no trouble doing that. My friend sat there and drank another full jar of the concoction. He was getting very dizzy and incoherent about that time.

Then he started screaming, “I am going blind!” He said he couldn’t see. The hosts didn’t seem to get too worried. They said it is common to go temporarily blind for those who are new at drinking it.

It wasn’t funny for my group, and we helped our blind friend back to the camp area. He eventually got his sight back. It must have been interesting for him to explain how he was blinded in the first place.

In life we can start slowly doing things we maybe shouldn’t be, and think that it is OK. We keep doing the things we know we shouldn’t be doing, and then we see we are in too deep and fall.

It is no different than drinking White Lightning. It seems harmless at first, but then we are blinded by the force that has overcome us.

Be careful to always check out what is happening around you, wherever you may be. There things that look innocent, and yet can lead you down the wrong path.

IWILL

All too often there are people in the private sector who try to take advantage of the soldiers when they come home. It could be a scheme to supposedly help you get rich quickly, or it may be people wanting to pilfer money out of you in other ways.  Never jump into any project or new venture without researching everything about it. Let others see what you may be doing and ask for their opinion. You will have many eyes to help you seek the truth for you.

Think About this

Isn’t it interesting that we always believe someone who says they are trying to help us be successful?

President Biden said this morning that there have been over 200 million first time virus shots given. That is good news. It is rolling in the right direction.

Some military news for you. Some of it is shocking.

“Even though you are a police officer, you still need to be held accountable” Marine veteran Carl E. Andersen Jr. told Pentagon reporter Jeff Schogol about the 2019 incident when Colorado Springs police officers tased him while he was in the hospital room of his 19-month old daughter. They tased Andersen because he refused to hand over his cell phone to a detective without an explanation, said Andersen, who is now suing the city of Colorado Springs, Teller County and the four officers involved in the altercation.
The Pentagon just can’t quit Afghanistan seems to be the message after U.S. Central Command chief Marine Gen. Kenneth McKenzie Jr, told lawmakers about the military’s plan to keep launching attacks against terrorist groups in the country without having troops on the ground.  President Joe Biden wants U.S. troops to leave Afghanistan by Sept. 11, but the plan to keep the country from being used as a base for terrorist attacks against the U.S. is still in play.

“I ask for peace,” said Maj. Gen. Shawn Manke, the head of the Minnesota National Guard, after two of his soldiers were injured in a drive-by shooting while they sat in their Humvee in Minneapolis on Sunday, writes Paul Szoldra in this article. Though the soldiers suffered only minor injuries and are back on duty, the event “highlights the volatility and tension in our communities,”  as the Twin Cities await the verdict of the trial of Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer charged with murdering George Floyd last May.

On a more serious note, a retired Pennsylvania Air National Guard brigadier general, 69-year-old Frank Sullivan was sentenced to five years probation and a $2,500 fine after blaming his child porn possession on PTSD. Sullivan, whose military biography never mentions combat, isn’t the first veteran to pull the “PTSD made me do it” card, writes Marine veteran and T&P editor-in-chief Paul Szoldra in his article. And, unfortunately for victims of child pornography, the card works.

A congressman wants to “fire the generals”  An investigation revealed that safety and maintenance lapses led to a fatal training accident last summer. Eight Marines and one sailor died in the accident when the amphibious assault vehicle they were riding in sunk off the coast of California. The Marines were not trained in escaping a submerged vehicle; the crew had no time to do proper maintenance beforehand; and no safety boats were nearby to help. But the generals in charge have not been punished.

Short warning…If you take a break from working at your computer, do not go outside to see how your wife is doing in her yard work!! She put me to work, and I just got back. LOL

Love that lady!!

As a teenager, just out of high school, I was pleasantly surprised how I adapted so quickly to basic training. The first few days, I was in shock, but then I decided I wanted to learn everything I coud and started listening carefully. I also decided that you HAVE to obey all orders. Makes life easier for you.

I have a story in my upcoming book, Signs of Hope for the Military: In and Out of the Trenches of Life, about a soldier in basic training that decided to challenge the rules. Wasn’t pretty.

The book is rolling again. I has to slow down for a while since I has some health issues, but

I am roaring back. I still hope to have the book out by this fall.

Another beautiful day outside. Going to have to go on a walk to build my strength back up.

Whenever I think of walking, I think of our brothers and sister who don’t dare go on a walk. They are hunkered down for fear of being shot. Never forget them.

I can’t list all the things I think our country is doing wrong right now. The list would be long. I pray for our president, because to be honest with you, I do not think he is even in charge.

The far left is dragging him down like a huge magnate.

___________________________________

I read an article where a second Lieutenant, in uniform, was dragged out of his car and pepper sprayed. The video doesn’t show him doing anything wrong. He told the officers he was afraid to get out of the car. Their answer… “You should be!”

He has sued the police department and I hope he wins.

We still have more National Guardsmen in the nation’s capital than there are in Afghanistan. That is appalling. What are they afraid of?

While in the military I found that the more you accept orders the less strain you will be in.

Some of the guys I knew tried to “buck,” the system, and it didn’t work out well for them.

The discipline I learned for the military has helped me in my civilian life.

Up date on my upcoming book, Signs of Hope for the Military: In and Out of the Trenches of Life.

I have added another person to interview. I spoke to him while at the Oregon Coast. He has some funny, and yet sad sharing to do and I know it will help other veterans.

Everything else is in the final stages of preparation.
